October 2001 - mailing list update

Several months ago, a young man by the name of Craig Smith introduced himself to me after a show in Philadelphia. He asked me if I would mind if he started a fan site. I said of course not and promptly asked him to buy me a drink. A budding friendship ensued.

Lo and behold, a few months have passed and his site is up, large and in charge. The fellow is a go-getter: his site is called LANDLOCKED and it features previously unavailable live MP3’s, tour diaries and pictures; not to mention up-to-date tour schedules and a mailing list that he seems to maintain and exploit rather vigorously. (In fact, these last two notes from me have gone through him.) The site will continue to be updated on a regular basis with new sections and other assorted and completely irrelevant tid bits.

I am extremely flattered and relieved to finally have someone paying attention to the day to day details on-line for me, so please bookmark the link and visit often. God only knows what kind of havoc we can wreak if we all stay in this together. Dig it.

DAVID

I first saw David Mead at the Upstage in Philadelphia in February of 2001.  The place was a "veritable shithole" as David lovingly referred to it in his tour diary, but David did a wonderful laidback set that consisted mainly of requests.  My only exposure to him came a few hours before - on the way to the show my friend played me "World Of A King" and "Breathe You In". I bought THE LUXURY OF TIME that night, going home thinking about how cool the gig was given the circumstances and what a nice guy David was (yes, autograph #1 was granted that night).

He returned to Philly in April, playing the Tin Angel.  This time he played a full acoustic set and I was blown away and inspired.  It was after that show that I came home and started work on this site, called LANDLOCKED at the time.  I obtained a promotional copy of MINE AND YOURS two weeks before it was released from a friend who worked in a music store and I built the skeleton for the site. After snapping some pics at the show at the Khyber in October 2001 I felt I had enough original content to launch. I had been in contact with David through those last few months to tell him my intentions; when the site was done he was gracious and genuinely flattered.

Over the years, the site has shaped into what it is now - an electronic reference guide. Cross referenced in every way I could, I think it will serve as a fine collection for those getting into the music of David Mead as well as that fanatical fanbase that can't seem to get enough of this stuff.

If you enjoy the site, please contribute - I'm always in need of pictures, setlists, show recordings (yes, David supports taping) and song transcriptions.

I must give thanks to David at this point, and I've neglected to do this in the past. Since I've expressed interest in taping shows, he has granted permission for everyone to do so. He's also been extremely generous in giving the fans rare tracks through this site. Even more important, he answers all questions I throw at him, ridiculous as they may be.

Having said all of that, have fun.
