"The original version is hilarious
- it's so funny. I remember when we did it I wanted it to
be the first song on the record - I think I wanted it to
be the title of the record at some point, but a woman at
the record label thought that somehow might be chauvinist.
That version is probably the most involved production I've
ever had on a record, it's like a little mini opera. It
literally has four or five different sections. The arrangement
is exactly the same as the one on INDIANA but it's totally
jacked up - I don't know how many tracks it ended up having.
At the time I was sad to see that one go - it kind of expressed
something about a direction that I wanted to go that I think
was important to me at the time because I sort of saw it
coming and it's probably something that's being more fleshed
out with TANGERINE and maybe a little bit with INDIANA.
At the time I got a lot of pressure from the record company
to try and focus the album as much as possible, though it
still ended up being one of the more eclectic things I've
done anyway. I just love that big theatrical aspect of music
and I felt like it captured it really well. It's so big,
in retrospect it may have overshadowed me." |
