Five Canadian designer brands you should buy in 2020

The news of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry house hunting in the Point Grey neighbourhood of Vancouver has inspired a bit of extra Canadian patriotism recently. We aren’t necessarily known as the most cutting-edge country when it comes to fashion (Canadian tuxedos and frumpy parkas come to mind) but Meghan has been spotted repping a few Canadian brands that we love. So with that in mind, we wanted to celebrate our five favourite Canadian designers. Even better, you can shop authentic pre-loved luxury at Mine & Yours, online or from our boutique in downtown Vancouver, for a fraction of the original retail price.

JUDITH AND CHARLES

The birth of this brand could be adapted into a Hollywood movie. Judith Richardson met Charles Le Pierrès during an unexpected encounter while on vacation on a Caribbean island. The eponymous brand was originally named Teenflo and was bought by the couple in 1990. For years, this well-tailored brand has influenced women with its attention to detail and easy sophistication.

MACKAGE

As Canadians, too often, we are forced to prioritize warmth over style. Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan saw the lack of fashionable jackets on the market and founded Mackage. Since 1999, they have succeeded in balancing fashion and function in luxury outerwear. Beginning with Eran’s involvement in the leather industry, Mackage went from solely producing leather jackets to now exploring down and wool.

ARITZIA

Founded in Vancouver in 1984 by Brian Hill, the Artizia brands have become a staple in every PNW woman’s closet. Over the years, the brand has remained true to their mission: designing beautiful clothes and selling with amazing service. Rapidly expanding into the United States, Aritzia is no longer just a PNW sensation, but a brand that can be recognized by all. Yes, all, including Kylie Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and of course, Megan Markle have all been spotted wearing the Aritizia brands!

CANADA GOOSE

Made to withstand the coldest climates on Earth, a Canada Goose jacket is a great item to add to your closet while living in Canada. Founded almost sixty years ago in Toronto, Sam Tick and David Reiss led the world in luxury outerwear. With its innovative technologies, Laurie Skreslet summited Mt. Everest sporting a custom parka which became the iconic “Big Mountain” jacket. Canada Goose jackets even graced the screens of cinema in the films: The Day After Tomorrow and National Treasure.

SMYTHE

Launched in 2004 with the priority of being modern and filled with emotions, Smythe has a strong focus on blazers and jackets. With their cool ideas in design, co-founders Andrea Lenczner and Christie Smythe changed people’s stereotypes of what a feminine structured blazer or jacket not only should be, but could be, with their resourceful impressions injected.

In 2020, we are promoting the buy, wear, and resale mindset rather than buy, wear, and discard! All of these brands can be found at our store or online.
