Alaïa was a Tunisian-born successful courtier and shoemaker. He started his career as a dressmaker’s assistant and then moved to Paris to work in fashion design. He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980, and he was known as the best designer of the year in 1984. Seductive and clinging clothes were a massive success and he was named “the king of cling”. He signed a partnership with Prada in 2000, but he always refused “the marketing-driven logic of luxury conglomerates” continuing to focus on clothing rather than bags.
